Albrecht Dürer's Young Hare is a watercolour and gouache study dated 1502, kept in the Albertina in Vienna. It measures about 25 by 22.5 centimetres and shows a hare in meticulous detail, every whisker and strand of fur observed closely, which is why it remains one of the best-known animal pictures in European art.

How was Young Hare made?

Dürer used watercolour with white gouache highlights on paper. The soft brown fur is built up in many fine strokes, and the white highlights pick out the whiskers and the shine of the eye. The hare is shown crouched and alert, as if about to bolt, which gives the study a surprising life.

Why does Young Hare still matter?

The sheet carries Dürer's monogram and the date 1502. Dürer, born in Nuremberg in 1471, treated close observation of nature as a serious subject at a time when many painters worked from set patterns. Because watercolour is sensitive to light, the Albertina shows the sheet only occasionally.
