Caravaggio painted The Seven Works of Mercy in Naples in 1606-1607, soon after fleeing Rome. It packs all seven acts of charity into a single dark street scene above the altar of the Pio Monte della Misericordia, where it still hangs, and shows how he turned a theological list into drama.

What are the seven works of mercy in the painting?

The works come from Matthew 25: feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, shelter the stranger, visit the sick, visit the prisoner and bury the dead. Caravaggio folds them into one crowded scene. A man cuts his cloak for a beggar (Saint Martin), a pilgrim is welcomed at an inn, and a corpse is carried out with only its feet visible. Samson drinking from a jawbone and a daughter feeding her imprisoned father, the Roman Charity, complete the set.

Why did Caravaggio paint it in Naples?

He fled Rome in 1606 after killing a man in a brawl and was sentenced to death in absentia. The Pio Monte della Misericordia, a charitable confraternity founded in 1601, commissioned the painting for its church, and the work remains on the altar for which it was painted.
