VICTORIAN ERA MASTERPIECE: JOHN SINGLETON COPLEY'S LEGACY
Updated: 4 days ago
John Singleton Copley painted Mrs. Daniel Sargent around 1763, when he was the leading portraitist of colonial Boston. It is an 18th-century American portrait, not a Victorian one: Queen Victoria's reign began in 1837, more than twenty years after Copley died in 1815. Its sharp detail is typical of his early style.
Who was John Singleton Copley?
Copley (1738-1815) was born in Boston and became its most sought-after portrait painter in the 1760s, painting merchants, officials and their families with exact attention to fabric, skin and furniture. In 1774 he left for Europe and settled in London, where he turned to large history paintings such as Watson and the Shark (1778).
Why is it not a Victorian painting?
The earlier title of this page called it Victorian, but the Victorian era ran from 1837 to 1901. Copley worked in the Georgian period, before the American Revolution. His colonial portraits are valued for their sharp realism, which gives sitters a solid, almost tactile presence, and for recording how Boston's elite wished to be seen.
